Compared to other skillsets and deliverables, ergonomics offers something truly unique - it's easy to get started. In this blogpost, I'm going to share some perspectives to see if this is beneficial, and how you can leverage it in your strategy and marketing.

So, let's dive into this week's post!

The Good & Bad: Barrier For Entry

I'm a big believer that Healthcare Professionals are perfectly positioned to add another revenue stream to their businesses via ergonomics assessments, consultations, and trainings.

Office ergonomics is perfectly positioned because there is such a low barrier to entry. You don't need to have a force transducer kit (and the costs associated with its upkeep), and scale to get started... you can literally make just take a walk in your basement, pick up your family's tape measure and get started!

But... here's the thing: No matter what industry you're in whenever there's a low barrier for entry means it's considered to be a mixture of opportunity and risk. I'll explain this in the next section.

The Risk

Since there's a very low barrier of entry it may attract less qualified people to perform office ergonomic deliverables to the market. I have a really interesting way to describe my perspective to you...

The Dunning-Kruger Effect

I think this is best illustrated by the Dunning-Kruger Effect, shown below. The Dunning-Kruger Effect is where people tend to over-estimate their competency and literally don't have the ability to recognize their inability to perform... and are usually very over-confident in their abilities!

The Dunning-Kruger effect shows why some people think they're great even when their work is doesn't add up. It might frustrate you, especially they are also very confident that they know what they're doing (even though it's clear they don't).

So, this may make it seem like office ergonomics is incredibly simple to get into. I agree that the barrier for entry is very low, however there needs to be a high level of understanding of ergonomics principles to be really effective at either preventing injuries or bringing someone back to work.

I've found that the saying 'the cream always floats to the top' is very true with ergonomics. If you are qualified and have the right experience and expertise, as well as stay persistent, the market will realize this and you'll get more paying clients.

Is There A 'RIGHT' Solution?

One more thing I'd like to share about the Dunning-Kruger Effect. The foundation for any ergonomic solution is ALWAYS with the following, hierarchy: Engineering, Administrative, Behavioural, and Personal Protective solutions.

Engineering solutions (aka changes to the physical work environment including making adjustments) are always recommended as the primary solution since they are the most effective. I've come across many ergonomics consultants who instead, insist on recommending stretching or exercises in the office. In the hierarchy of ergonomic controls, that is the 3rd least effective type of solution and should NEVER BE THE ONLY recommendation an ergonomics professional delivers. This is the Dunning-Kruger Effect in full swing.

The Opportunity

Office ergonomics is the perfect gateway to getting started in the ergonomics industry. There's always a need for competent professionals in the field who deliver quality programs.

Let's talk about what you need to get started.

Compared with all the equipment and strategy that you need in industrial ergonomics, all you need to get started with office ergonomics is a tape measure and an assessment tool. In the Ergonomics Blueprint (that you can learn about by clicking the link at the end of this article) I teach Health Professionals all the details involved with office ergonomic assessments, including what tools to use and how to find your first paying client.

If there is a need in your city or town for industrial ergonomics, you  simply re-invest your profit from office ergonomic assessments and invest in force transducers required to do more complex ergonomic assessments in industry.

The opportunity with office ergonomics is adding a revenue stream aligned with most Healthcare Professionals expertise and experience. And with office ergonomic assessments, consultations and trainings, there is such a low barrier of entry to get started here!
